What to expect on my first session?
The first session with your therapist is about getting to know each other, collecting information and working on establishing the therapeutic relationship, which is one of the most important steps in therapy.
All therapists are unique and do things differently. However, here are the basics of what you should expect on your first session:
⁃ Intake and consent to treat- you can find these and other forms using the tabs on the right side of this page. Please download it and complete it ahead of time to maximize time. Your therapist can answer any questions you might have.
⁃ Assessment- you will discuss your concerns and reasons for services with your therapist. Together you will be able to identify issues, symptoms, level of severity, support system, coping skills, etc.
⁃ Your story- your therapist and you will talk about your story and how you arrived at this point in your life. You will talk about your family origin, important relationships, childhood, significant events and experiences, as well as potential sources of the problem among other important topics.
⁃ You and your therapist will also identify goals and expectations for your treatment.
Our therapists are professionally trained to evaluate and treat behavioral, cognitive, emotional and relational difficulties in individuals, couples and families.
